Ottawa:

Four Indian nationals were killed and one injured when the car they were traveling in crashed and caught fire in the Canadian province of Ontario, authorities said.

The crash happened last Thursday in the area of Lake Shore Boulevard East and Cherry Street in the city of Toronto, police said in a news release.

The five people, aged between 25 and 32, were traveling in a Tesla when it “lost control and struck the guardrail and then a concrete pillar” before bursting into flames, the news release said.

“We have gathered some evidence so far that suggests speed was a factor,” Toronto Police Inspector Phillip Sinclair told the Toronto Sun newspaper.

Four of the car’s occupants were pronounced dead at the scene by police officers who responded to the crash, the news release said. The fifth occupant, a 25-year-old woman, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to the report, she was rescued by a passing motorist who stopped to help.

“Sincere condolences on the tragic loss of Indian nationals in a car accident that took place in Toronto yesterday,” the official message from the Indian Consulate in Toronto said in a post on X.

The post added that the consulate was in regular contact with local authorities and affected families in Canada and India. “All necessary assistance is being provided,” the report said.

Police have asked residents and motorists who may have CCTV footage or witnessed the event to contact investigators.
