A former Indian Navy officer, Vijay Kumar Joshi, 52, died after a truck hit his two-wheeler in Ghatkopar East; The police are looking for the driver.

Mumbai: A 52-year-old former Indian Navy personnel died after a speeding truck rammed his two-wheeler near Kamraj Nagar in Ghatkopar East and fled. The accident took place on Friday evening, in which the victim was seriously injured and died the next day.

Pant Nagar police have registered an FIR against the unidentified truck driver for causing death due to negligence and have launched a manhunt to trace the driver.

“After receiving the call about the accident, our patrol team arrived at the location and learned that the victim, identified as Vijay Kumar Joshi, was hit from behind by a speeding dumper. He was thrown several meters into the air and landed on the road. An on-duty JCB driver, identified as Manir Ansari, took Vijay to Rajawadi Hospital, about 10 minutes away from the accident site on Eastern Express Highway,” an officer said.

The officers recovered Vijay’s phone and wallet from the spot and discovered that he was working as a commissioned officer in the Indian Navy. In the Navy, a chief petty officer is a non-commissioned officer who ranks above enlisted personnel such as sailors, but below chief petty officers and chief petty officers.

“Joshi was staying with his wife and 20-year-old son Divyesh. He voluntarily retired from the Navy in 2005. Divyesh studied at the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) in Matunga and gave a presentation at the institute on Friday. “Vijay went to drop him and when he was returning from Thane to Matunga on a bike, the accident happened,” the officer said.

Vijay’s family members were approached by the police officers.
