Former Man Utd star Anthony Martial’s move to Flamengo fails

Brazilian club Flamengo have reportedly ended negotiations with former Manchester United striker Anthony Martial.

The 28-year-old is currently a free agent after his contract at Old Trafford expired in July.

Martial left United after nine years at the club, joining from Monaco in 2015. During that time he made 317 appearances in all competitions, scoring 90 goals and providing 47 assists, and won the FA Cup, EFL Cup, Europa League and Community Shield.

However, Martial has consistently struggled with fitness issues, and according to Transfermarkt, he missed 94 games through injury during his time at Manchester United. He was loaned to Sevilla for the second half of the 2021/22 season.

Still, Martial’s considerable talent has generated plenty of interest this summer.

Talks with Flamengo’s Anthony Martial fail

Anthony Martial leaves the field after being substituted during the English Premier League football match between Manchester United and Bournemouth at Old Trafford in Manchester, north-west England, on December 9, 2023.

Brazilian giants Flamengo recently named Martial as a top target after striker Pedro suffered a serious knee injury that is likely to keep him out for a long time.

However, according to a report from Meia Hora (via The Sun), the talks have failed.

The report states that Martial’s demands were ‘unworkable’. The 30-cap France international demanded a three-year contract and made salary demands that were simply too high for Flamengo.

According to Capology, Martial earned a whopping £13m during his final season at Manchester United, enough to put him level with Mason Mount, with only Marcus Rashford (£15.6m), Raphael Varane (£17.68m) and Casemiro (£18.2m) earning more.

That equates to £250k-a-week. Even if Martial were to take a significant pay cut, Flamengo would find it difficult to meet his demands, with former Chelsea defender David Luiz currently their highest-paid player on £39k-a-week (according to Salary Sport).
