Former England goalkeeper Joe Hart joins Match of the Day team for new campaign

Former England goalkeeper Joe Hart will be a guest studio analyst on Match of the Day during the new season.

Hart, who has played 75 international matches, was part of the BBC Sport team that covered the ‘Three Lions’ as they reached the Euro 2024 final this summer.

The 37-year-old made 340 appearances in England’s top division, helping Manchester City win two Premier League titles, two FA Cups and two League Cups.

He retired from football at the end of last season after helping Celtic win the Scottish Premiership and the Cup.

“I’m very excited, very proud and looking forward to playing an incredible role in something I grew up with,” Hart said.

“I want to give back as much as possible from the career I’ve had and I want to continue learning.

“I am so happy to be working in such a great environment and most importantly learning a lot about a new aspect of my life.”

Now that Hart has hung up his boots, he will join regular presenters Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer in the studio when Match of the Day – which first aired in 1964 – returns for a new season on Saturday at 22:20 BST.

“Match of the Day has stood the test of time,” Hart added.

“It’s never stood still. It’s always trying to grow and always trying to build, and always trying to bring the game to the viewers in whatever way possible.”

The BBC is also expected to announce a number of other big names for a new studio panel, with Micah Richards set to take a more prominent role as commentator this term.
