Flyers prospects know Jett Luchanko as the ‘one-man power play break-in’ – NBC Sports Philadelphia

VOORHEES, NJ — The Flyers’ amateur scouts weren’t the only ones within the organization to get an up-close look at Jett Luchanko.

That was also true for prospects Oliver Bonk and Denver Barkey. Their London Knights team faced the Flyers’ 2024 first-round pick and the Guelph Storm six times during the OHL regular season. Luchanko, known as a burner, had a made-up name on London’s scouting report.

“A one-man power play break-in, that’s what we called him in London because they just threw him back, it was one-on-four and he skated it every time,” Bonk said Tuesday at the Flyers’ development camp. “He’s a special player.”

The 17-year-old center is a speedy playmaker who had 30 power-play assists last season, second in the OHL and four ahead of Barkey, who scored 102 points.

“He’s unreal, he came in this year and really worked his way up,” Barkey said Wednesday. “I would say he was a riser all year, really impressive. Their power play intrusion was legit, just give him the ball and he’d find a way to get it in.

“He’s a very special player, he seems like a great guy, very hardworking and he’s also very talented. He has a bright future.”

Luchanko finished the season with 74 points (20 goals, 54 assists) in 68 games and was selected 13th overall by the Flyers last Friday.

“When I went to see Barkey and Bonk play, they were playing against Guelph,” Flyers director of player development Riley Armstrong said Tuesday. “Going into the game, I’m not thinking, ‘Oh, who’s the next draft class coming up?’ And I was constantly checking Elite Prospects, thinking, ‘Who’s this No. 7 pick from the Guelph Storm?’ And that was Jett.

“So it was really cool to see how he played. It caught my attention, and apparently a lot of other people’s attention as well.”

Going forward, the Flyers would welcome Luchanko’s strengths on the man advantage, having had the worst power play percentage in the NHL over the past three seasons.

Based on his draft ranking by various public scouting services, Luchanko’s selection at No. 13 by the Flyers was seen as a bit of a stretch. But that won’t change his mindset.

“The draft doesn’t change the way I see things or approach my business,” Luchanko said Tuesday. “I just try to work hard every day and I think good things come from that. I’m not really worried about where I’m going, I’m just worried about how I’m going to work and start here.”
