Flyers Head Coach Ranked In NHL Super 16

The NHL released a ranking of the league’s best coaches, the so-called “Super 16.” Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella was placed at number 11.

Mike G. Morreale, a veteran draft writer who wrote the text explaining Tortorella’s rankings, acknowledged that despite an unexpectedly good season last year, the Flyers are still considered underdogs.

“(Tortorella) always seems to get the best out of himself when the odds are against the team he’s coaching,” Morreale wrote.

It was also highlighted how the two-time Jack Adams winner’s high expectations often help his players reach new levels on the ice.

“He knows what buttons to push to get the most out of veterans and rookies,” the blurb continued. “(He) has that knack for building teams through hard work, grit and determination.”

Tortorella is currently the ninth most successful coach in NHL history with 742 wins. He is second among U.S.-born coaches, trailing only New York Rangers coach Peter Laviolette (807 wins).

In 2004, he won the Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

He was a four-time finalist for the Jack Adams Trophy (2002–03, 2003–04, 2011–12, 2016–17), winning the trophy as head coach of the Lightning in 2004 and with the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2017.

The 2024-25 season will be his third with the Flyers and his 23rd overall.
