Texas high school coaches call for UIL rule changes amid staggering number of transfers

The University Interscholastic League estimates that as many as 15,000 athletes could transfer to Texas high schools this school year. They could transfer within the state or come from out of state.

The UIL, which regulates extracurricular activities at Texas public schools, prohibits students from transferring for athletic purposes, but at that rate, coaches say there’s an increased risk that schools will be able to create “super teams.” Especially considering the UIL said less than 1 percent of all transfers were ruled ineligible last year.

For the first time in decades, the UIL is willing to do something about it. But it may not be the dramatic change that many are calling for.
