Ferrari could revive the F40 as a new Icona supercar

The modernized version of the iconic F40 will reportedly join Ferrari’s Icona series of exclusive, ultra-limited production models

  • There are rumors that Ferrari is about to revive the F40.
  • If true, it would be built in limited numbers as part of the Icona line.
  • Lamborghini has done the same with Sián-based Countach in 2021.

It sounds a bit wild, but Ferrari may be about to make a Lamborghini move and revive perhaps its most iconic model ever: the F40. If these rumors are true, we could soon see what an F40 would look like if Ferrari were to build one in 2024 or 2025. Is hell officially frozen over?

Not so long ago, this kind of revisionist history would have been sacrilege. Lamborghini’s then CEO even said that the brand would never put into production anything like the critically admired Miura concept from 2006, as it was built purely to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original. However, in 2021, the same brand launched a renewed Countach on the Sián platform. Ferrari may be about to do the same, at least according to Top Gear.

The British publication claims that a modernized F40 could be in the works as part of their limited series of “Icona” models, according to “very reliable sources.” To add fuel to the fire, Ferrari has already built a few cars that harken back to older models. Both the Monza SP1/SP2 and the Daytona SP3 demonstrate that tendency to appeal to the brand’s cachet with retro-inspired, limited-edition (and ultra-expensive) supercars.

The report claims that Ferrari has actually done something with F40 vibes in the SP38 Deborah. That example was based on the 488 GTB and, like the last Prancing Horse signed off by Enzo Ferrari, had a twin-turbo V8 and a slit hood, but that’s about where the similarities end. However, this new creation will have some of the same design features and general ethos of the F40.

That may sound like a response to Lamborghini’s own Countach revival, but perhaps it’s less of an answer and more of an admission they were waiting for to see how the market would react to Lamborghini’s revived Countach.

As people lined up to pay millions for the new Countach, which was essentially a restyled Sián (itself based on the Aventador), a new F40 is likely to attract similar buyers – and face the same backlash from purists too. Well, at least Ferrari never said it wouldn’t do things like this, just to go back on its word.
