The three-time Grand Slam champion would have made the same choice at the Wimbledon Championshipsgive up singles and play doubles with his brother JapieAndy struggled with injuries in the latter years of his career, but the Scot never gave up and enjoyed his ‘second career’ (although he did not achieve much success).

Murray retired from professional tennis without regrets, knowing that he had given everything of himself and even more. The British champion has tested his body in recent years and many thought his career was over in 2019. During the Australian Open that year, Andy announced that his hip pain was too severe and that he would retire if he did not find a solution. Murray underwent a delicate hip operation and began a kind of ‘second career’, in which he played some great matches without finding the continuity of the past.

Aliassime pays tribute to Murray

Especially in recent years, Andy Murray has become a great example for all athletes. His resilience has also inspired other players, who have sent him wonderful messages in recent days. In a recent post on X, the Canadian ace Felix Auger-Aliassime paid tribute to the former world number 1: “I cannot forget to take a moment to acknowledge one of my favourite players on and off the pitch who has just closed a chapter in one of the greatest stories our sport has ever seen. I have always been so inspired by your resilience, determination and winning drive throughout your career. Thank you for being a good example for our generation and the generations to come.. And thank you for being you, because you are one of the few Andy. We will miss you.”

Despite playing in the same era as the Big 3, Andy Murray managed to win many important titles and became world number 1 in 2016. 20-time Grand Slam champion and former world number 1 Roger Federer paid tribute to Andy on ATP’s social media channels: “So, Sir Andy Murray, incredible effort in the most fantastic career, being a wonderful human being and doing it all with a huge family at the end – and a hip, and a body, that clearly wasn’t giving you what you wanted at the end.

But you are a real inspiration to me and a lot of the players out there and I’m so glad you’ve been able to stick around for so long. Just from my side Andy, I have so much respect. I loved playing against you, even though I lost to you so many times – and it was brutal. Congratulations on all you have accomplished, and all that is yet to come. Only the very best, and I’m sure we’ll see each other again in the future.”

Andy gave his best

Spanish legend and 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafa Nadal Murray also praised: “Andy Murray (has) had a great career. I think in some ways, I mean, I don’t like to say he deserves more or less, because if I say I deserve more when I don’t have injuries, right? No, I don’t, because I had the injuries, right? But he’s had a lot of finals. He was a great player who probably played at a difficult time in the history of tennis, because he was sharing the tour at the height of Novak DjokovicRoger Federer and I. He was, I felt, the one who was on the same level as us, in general terms. In terms of wins, it is true that he has achieved less. In terms of tennis level, in terms of mentally maintaining the winning mentality week after week, he was the only one who was very close to the same level as us.”
