FC Dallas transfers striker José Mulato to FC Spartak Subotica

FC Dallas announced today that striker José Mulato has permanently transferred to FK Spartak Subotica of the Serbian SuperLiga. Mulato’s loan to San Antonio FC has been terminated.

Mulato’s departure opens up a U22 Initiative Player and an international roster for FC Dallas.

Mulato joined the FC Dallas organization in 2022, where he would play for North Texas SC in MLS NEXT Pro, scoring 20 goals in 41 games. Mulato is the third all-time leading scorer for North Texas SC.

The Colombian made his MLS debut with FC Dallas on February 26, 2023. He would go on to make six more appearances for Dallas.

Well, moves like this have been in the works for Mulato for a while. In January we discussed a possible transfer to a team in Slovenia. But now he’s going to Serbia, and that’s fine.

Mulato was never going to be in the plans for the club in 2024, which is why he was in San Antonio this year. While with the USL Championship squad, he struggled to find time on the court. He played 227 minutes in nine matches with the club.

This opens up a U22 and international roster slot for FC Dallas to work with as the summer transfer window opens next month. I already have has broken down some areas of need on the site this morning. I still plan to discuss how FC Dallas could bring in some new players based on the current roster sometime next week.

I wonder where this move stands (both inbound and outbound) for FC Dallas. Mulato was a pretty good success story at North Texas SC, but really struggled to excel at any level above MLS Next Pro. The use of an U22 and an international squad for a man who wasn’t really in the club’s plan has also been difficult to stomach for some who follow the club.
