Fatal shooting appears to be an accident

HIGH POINT – The fatal shooting of a 32-year-old man in a northwest High Point neighborhood on Oct. 19 appears to be an accident, according to a police incident report and a 911 call from a witness at the scene of the shooting.

Hasson Dwayne Williams of Greensboro died of a single gunshot wound to the head at his home in the 400 block of Ridgebrooke Drive. The High Point Police incident report shows that several people in the home said two people were holding a 9mm Glock handgun when it fired.

In a recording of an emotional eight-minute 911 call, a woman who was in the home told a 911 dispatcher that Williams had been shot by “mistake.” The woman said Williams and another man were handling the gun when it fired.

The distraught woman told the dispatcher, sobbing as she talked, that Williams was barely breathing.

“Oh, my God,” the woman wailed. “I have to call his mother.”

There were loud voices and chaotic noise in the background of the call. The ambulance service tried to calm the woman while an ambulance was on its way.

Police provided few details about the fatal shooting in a news release Thursday, saying the case was turned over to the State Bureau of Investigation because one person at the scene of the shooting was related to a local elected official, although the official was not. named.

Enterprise on Thursday requested the incident report and 911 recording, which are public records. They were released on Friday.
