Fans on social media in shock after discovering how much the BBC paid John McEnroe to commentate on Wimbledon 2024

Former world number one John McEnroe’s salary as a BBC commentator surprised fans on social media. The 65-year-old is a well-known face in the tennis world and was part of the local broadcast team.

The BBC has released information on how much money various individuals were paid to take part in their productions for various sports. One of the names highlighted was McEnroe who ended up earning a whopping £195,000 for 14 days work.

That amount is less than what the former world number one was paid last year, but it still left fans confused as to who took to social media platforms to express their feelings. “How can the BBC justify paying John McEnroe £195,000 to commentate for a few hours a day for 14 days?” asked one fan. “Wow, 2 weeks work for nearly £100,000.00 a week. Come on, all the kids’ hard work is paying off,” wrote another.

McEnroe enjoyed a very successful career during his playing career. One of his most successful competitions was Wimbledon, where he won the title three times. The first of those titles came in 1981 when he defeated Swede Bjorn Borg in a five-set thriller by a score of 4–6, 7–6(7–1), 7–6(7–4), 6–4. In 1983, he won his second Wimbledon title after defeating Australian Chris Lewis in straight sets by a score of 6–2, 6–2, 6–2. In 1983, McEnroe won his third and final Wimbledon title after defeating fellow Australian Jimmy Connors by a score of 6–1, 6–1, 6–2.

This year, the men’s singles title was won by Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated Serbian Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the final with a score of 6-2, 6-2, 7-6. In the women’s singles, Czech Barbora Krejcikova took the title after defeating Italian Jasmine Paolini in the final with a score of 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

On this day, Bjorn Borg defeated John McEnroe in one of the most memorable Wimbledon matches in history 🙌
