Fabrizio Romano provides update on Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana

Wesley Fofana believes Chelsea fans have only seen 10-20% of his true potential since he joined the club, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Fofana joined from Leicester City in 2022 for an initial fee of £70million, but his time at Stamford Bridge has been plagued by injuries.

The France international missed the entirety of last season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, but is now fit again and features regularly under Enzo Maresca.

The 23-year-old has started all five of Chelsea’s league games and is Maresca’s first-choice defence alongside Levi Colwill.

Last season the Blues conceded a club record number of goals, conceding two in their opening two league games.

However, they appear to be showing improvement in that regard after keeping back-to-back clean sheets against Bournemouth and West Ham, with Fofana playing a key role.

The Frenchman admitted earlier this summer that he considered a bid from Marseille but rejected the offer. Romano has given an update on Fofana.

“Wesley Fofana has decided to stay at Chelsea in the summer, he feels the fans have only seen 10-20% of his real potential,” he told The Here We Go Podcast.

“He feels that after the injury it will take time, but he wants to be part of the project. He wants to repay Chelsea, and the club trusts him and did not want to sell him.”

This season is crucial for Fofana, who is looking to get his Chelsea career back on track after a long spell on the sidelines.

When fit and playing at his best, Fofana is probably Chelsea’s best central defender and Maresca will have to guide him well throughout the season as he makes his comeback from a serious knee injury.
