Exclusive: Troye Sivan Opens Up About His Career as the Face of Gap and His Blockbuster Tour with Charli XCX

Considering the way Troye Sivan has been dressing onstage all summer long during his sizzlingly sexy, joyfully queer Something to Give Each Other Tour — donning a series of racy-yet-elegant grails from both emerging designers and luxury houses — you might be surprised to learn that his latest outing is fronting a campaign for The Gap. It turns out, though, that the Aussie pop star’s off-duty style has more in common with the mall-faithful brand’s comfy staples than you might think.

“It might be weird because of my job, but I actually don’t like being the center of attention outside of work,” Sivan tells me. “I’m happy just walking around in my favorite jeans and a T-shirt, that’s my everyday life… I guess it’s an Australian thing, but it’s like you just want to blend in. When I’m on stage, it’s the other way around, and I feel completely comfortable because it feels justified in that moment. But in my everyday life, I would much, much, much rather not be there. There’s never any hassle.”

It’s fitting, then, that while Sivan’s hot, horny alter ego is taking a break from touring before ramping up again for the feverishly anticipated Sweat Tour, his co-headlining outing with Charli XCX — his more introverted, laid-back self takes center stage in the new Gap spot. Titled “Get Loose,” the clip is set in an industrial space that looks like it was ripped straight from Janet Jackson’s “The Pleasure Principle” video. Clad in a relaxed white T-shirt and baggy jeans, Sivan gets down to Thundercat’s “Funny Thing” as dance troupe CDK Company envelops him in their groove.

Teaming up with one of pop music’s most compelling contemporary figures feels like a coup for Gap, a storied American label in the midst of a major transition with a new creative director at the helm of its parent company. And there’s plenty of Sivan’s vibrant, sensual appeal in “Get Loose”: The campaign was choreographed by Sergio Reis, the mastermind behind the instantly viral moves in Sivan’s “Rush” and “Got Me Started” music videos.
