A look at the career of Darren Lewis

Lewis committed to Texas A&M after an outstanding high school football career, where he broke numerous records. He spent four seasons for the Aggies and then announced himself for NFL the Draft in 1991.

Darren was a standout player for Texas A&M, surpassing Eric Dickerson’s record in the Southwest Conference, but then his career spiraled into addiction.

Lewis excelled at Dallas’ exclusive Carter High School and was often cited as one of the nation’s top prospects in 1987.

He surpassed Earl Campbell’s record of 4,450 yards rushing in 1987-90, set by Dickerson before bowl numbers were taken into account.

He finished his career ranked fifth on the NCAA career rushing chart, behind only Tony Dorsett, Charles White, Herschel Walker and Archie Griffin himself.

Known for his vicious running style as “Tank,” he was a two-time All-American while attending Texas A&M. According to career rushing stats, he still has 1,309 yards to gain to move into second place.

Lewis was confident he would test clean, but he claimed he was introduced to cocaine at parties and by potential agents during the NFL selection process.

Despite never testing positive for drugs, he was arrested in 1993 on domestic violence charges. Lewis was still battling his addiction when he returned to Dallas from the NFL, despite his efforts to change his behavior once the league ended.

Lewis won the SWC Offensive Player of the Year title in 1988. In addition to these honors, he was named to one First Team All-American and two First Teams All-SWC.
