Ernie Els breaks through at Firestone and earns a spot in The Players

Ernie Els will be attending the TPC Sawgrass for the first time in eight years.

Els, who was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2011, won the PGA Tour Champions Kaulig Championship on Sunday by one stroke over YE Yang with a score of 10-under-par 270. Els shot a final-round 68 at Firestone Golf and Country Club in Akron, Ohio, and held on despite a score of 1-over-par 36 on the back nine.

One of the perks of winning his first PGA Tour Champions major is a spot in the 2025 Players Championship on the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. Els last played in the tournament in 2017 and will be making his 25th start at age 55 when the tournament begins on March 13.

Els has four top-10 finishes at The Players, with his best week being a tie for sixth in 2008.

Els has made 17 of 24 cuts on the Stadium Course but has missed five of his last eight. He was candid about his record at The Players during his post-round press conference.

“Well, my record is crap there,” he said. “I’ve only had two top 10s there on Pete Dye’s masterpiece. But I think I’ll go there. Knowing myself, I’m going to give it a try and see how we stack up against the flat bellies. I’m looking forward to it.”

Els did not get to enjoy his victory for long. He and his family, and friend Darren Clarke, jumped on a private plane to Scotland, where the Open Championship starts in Troon on Thursday. Els and Clarke are both in the field as former champions.
