Erik ten Hag is not the reason Matthijs de Ligt moved to Man United

Manchester United’s new signing Matthijs de Ligt has stated that Erik ten Hag was not the reason for his move to the Premier League. The defender has opened up about his decision to leave Bayern Munich this summer.

The central defender’s career did not go as many had expected after he introduced himself to the world during the memorable 2018/19 season that Ajax played under the leadership of Ten Hag.

The Dutch coach got the best out of De Ligt, who has been away from Juventus and Bayern Munich in recent years. This summer, the 25-year-old decided to reunite with his former Ajax manager at Man United, but he has indicated that the 54-year-old is not the only reason he has moved to Manchester.

“Erik ten wasn’t the only reason I joined Manchester United,” De Ligt said Today Inside via Fabrizio Romano. “We are talking about Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“There is a lot of pressure because the fans are used to things from the past, now it is up to us.”

Matthijs de Ligt faces tough task at Man United

De Ligt joined Man United this summer as part of a €50 million deal with Bayern Munich and will be tasked with strengthening the Red Devils’ defence alongside new teammate Leny Yoro.

Since Ten Hag moved to Old Trafford, the centre-back position has been a problem area and while it is still early days, it does not look like this will be resolved this season.

Man United’s defence has looked shaky in their opening three Premier League games and was torn apart against Liverpool last time out. De Ligt has a tough task ahead of him if he wants to help improve the Manchester club’s defensive line and his reasons for joining the club will have to pay off as the coming months will require a lot of hard work.
