England and Switzerland will face each other in the exciting quarter-finals of the 2024 European Championship in Düsseldorf on Saturday. The favourites are the Swiss.

Sure, the England team is packed with superstars, but Gareth Southgate’s all-star team came within seconds of elimination against Slovakia on Sunday. Then in the 95th minute a Jude Bellingham bicycle kick saved them and Harry Kane headed in early in extra time to turn the game on its head as England emerged victorious. Yet England’s performance was far below par and the only consolation the Three Lions will take from this tournament so far is that they are in the quarter-finals without having played well. Not at all.

The opposite is true for Switzerland, which performed excellently under Murat Yakin. The Swiss have dismantled Italy in their last 16 games and their fluid attacking system of Rieder, Embolo and Vargas buzzing around ahead of Freuler, Xhaka and wingbacks Ndoye and Aebischer also pushing forward is brilliant to watch. Switzerland won’t be bookies’ favourites for this match but anyone who has watched them at this tournament will know they are in much better form than England and they also look solid defensively with Akanji, Schar, Rodriguez and Sommer having incredible tournament experience.

English team news, focus

Marc Guehi is suspended for accumulating yellow cards, so Southgate will be forced to make a switch at centre-back, with Ezri Konsa looking set to be the next man up. That said, there is a real argument for England to go with a three-man back line. Walker, Stones and Konsa at centre-back with Alexander-Arnold at right wing-back and Saka or Trippier at left wing-back could work well. Bellingham and Foden in more central roles behind Kane could work in a 3-4-2-1, and that change in formation would put England in direct competition with the Swiss formation. At this point, Southgate needs to make some drastic changes to change performance levels.

Switzerland team news, focus

The Swiss team had an injury concern over captain and talisman Granit Xhaka. He had a scan for an adductor injury before this match, but it looks like he will be fine. That is huge for Switzerland, as Xhaka is the heartbeat of their team. Apart from that, Switzerland will probably play exactly as they did against Italy. They will have Duah come off the bench and he looked very dangerous, while veteran Xherdan Shaqiri certainly has a big goal in him. The biggest strength of this Swiss team is that they are energetic and relentless when pressing in groups and are dangerous on the counter-attack.
