England vs Japan player ratings: Borthwick’s men triumph in Tokyo – Page 3 of 3

14 Immanuel Feyi-Waboso 7.5

He presented a well-rounded performance in attack and defence, with the Exeter wing demonstrating his physical presence on both sides of the ball. He scored a walk-in out wide on only his second England start, thanks to Smith’s excellent missed pass. Excellent interception after 40 minutes to win possession before half-time. Neat line break immediately after half-time, with a ruthless pace. Off for Tom Roebuck after 59 minutes.

15 George Furbank7

Showed some excellent running lines in the first half, but has less success from the boot. His chip kick into the backfield in the 19th minute rolled into the dead ball area. Despite the constant pressure on the full-back, he managed to perform some clever atrocities.

REPLACEMENTS

16 Theo Dan 6

On to his Saracens clubmate and mentor Jamie George shortly after half-time. It was entrusted to see the victory in front with the early departure of the captain.

17 Joe Marler 7.5

On to his 93rd England cap, reuniting with Dan Cole. Made a solid contribution in the 54th minute, disrupting Japan’s lineout maul for a key turnover. This was followed by a scrum penalty, as the Harlequin showed off his best scrum magic. Scored a huge hit after 73 minutes, which reverberated through the stadium.

18 Wil Stuart 6

On to Dan Cole, as the English peloton needed new legs in the brutal heat of Tokyo. We fought hard during scrum time to keep Japan behind.

19 Charlie Ewels, 5

However, after 65 minutes he was immediately under his own post as Japan crossed for the first attempt. Solid work on the set-piece as despite leaking a few tries, England maintained their strength in attack. Dangerous clear to Michael Leitch after 72 minutes as he dived at the captain’s legs. A yellow card was shown (and off-field review) as England finished the match with 14 men. The off-field assessment upgraded the foul to a red card for the Bath man, no mitigation and a high level of danger.

20 Tom Curry6.5

Made his first cap for England since the bronze medal match at the Rugby World Cup. Replaced Underhill on his return to England. Scored a number of strong hits and clinked into contact, looking straight back up to speed on his return to England. Punished after 67 minutes at the ruck, with his over-eagerness to impress proving costly at times.

21Harry Randall7

On to Alex Mitchell after 51 minutes as he earned his first Test match minutes under Steve Borthwick. Intercepted Japan’s looping pass on 53 minutes, to stop an attempted goal for the Cherry Blossoms. Scored on his return to England, when he darted in to score from the back of the unlucky England side down to 14 men.

22Fin Smith6

Off to the field to replace Marcus Smith after the fly-half’s trip to the sin bin. Not the ideal first involvement as he couldn’t force Nezuka into the ball as Japan crossed to score.

23Tom Roebuck 6.5

On to his England debut on the hour, with Steve Borthwick awarding a first England appearance to the previously eligible Scotland man. Demonstrated fearsome pace and agility on his first carry before taking the charge off after 70 minutes.
