England vs Australia: Harry Brook scores first one-day international to lead home side to victory

Captain Harry Brook struck a magnificent maiden One-Day International century as England defeated Australia in the third match to breathe new life into their new era of white-ball cricket.

Knowing that a defeat would win Australia the series, reserve captain Brook scored 110 not out and led his team to a 46-run victory using the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method.

England were 254-4 and on course for victory, needing 51 runs from 74 balls, when rain spoiled the finish at Chester-le-Street.

Such a scenario seemed remote when England were 11-2 up and the pressure was on after heavy defeats in the previous two matches. Brook started cautiously, however, and hit a perfect pace with 13 fours and two sixes.

He made 156 runs with Will Jacks and when Jacks scored an elegant 84 from 82, Brook reached his century in 87 balls.

A guest appearance from Liam Livingstone, who scored 33 from 20, put England well ahead of the DLS par score of 208 when the rain began.

Brooks’ knock meant England had no regrets about the poor end to their bowling innings, leaving Australia at 304-7.

The hosts can now level the five-match series at 2-2 in the fourth ODI at Lord’s on Friday.
