England could play the US on American soil next year

The Rugby Football Union (RFB) are currently discussing the possibility of England playing the USA Eagles in the mid-year Tests in 2025.

This in itself isn’t newsworthy, as England last played the Eagles in 2021. However, there is also consideration for it to be played in an American stadium, which would be the first time England have taken on America on home soil since 2001 – almost 24 years ago!

Should this happen, it would certainly generate a lot of excitement, especially among sports bettors. According to many of the bookmakers cited by Betting Sites Limited, England often attract good odds – they were 10/1 for last year’s World Cup and are already at 4/1 for next year’s Six Nations. So the odds of success could be high for a meeting with the USA. However, with the upcoming Olympics in mind, Team USA are at 33/1 for the gold medal, while Team GB are at 50/1.

Although it would be an exciting match, England have nothing to prove by playing the United States, as the Three Lions have defeated the United States in all previous meetings.

England have played the Eagles a total of seven times. Four of these matches have taken place during the Rugby World Cup, with the remainder taking place during Summer Tours and June Internationals.

England first defeated the United States 34-6 in the 1987 Rugby World Cup in Australia.

England’s biggest win over the States came in 1999 when the two teams faced off at Twickenham Stadium in London during the USA’s Summer Tour. Playing at home may have helped England in this match, with a 106-8 victory over the States.

The last – and only – time England played the USA in America was at the Mathew J. Boxer Stadium in San Francisco during England’s 2001 summer tour, with the Three Lions again triumphing 48-19.

The last time these two countries faced each other was during the June 2021 internationals in a match that took place at Twickenham Stadium in London. England again won by a score of 43-29.

The potential showdown between the two teams next year would take place during the British and Irish Lions Tour of Australia, which would give crypto sports bettors plenty of matches to bet on.

In keeping with tradition, England rugby union has scheduled a pair of South American Test matches for next summer against Argentina’s Los Pumas, around the same time as the next British and Lions tour. This also happened in 2013 and 2009. The difference is that this time around, there is a chance that the English will head north to take on the US Eagles, based on recent discussions.

However, the possibility of England taking on the USA next year depends entirely on whether Steve Borthwick is recruited by British and Irish Lions head coach Andy Farrell to serve as assistant coach on the upcoming Australian tour. If this were to happen, England would absolutely have to limit the number of Test matches they participate in.

Not only will another win against America be good for England’s international rankings, but even a loss could benefit the US in the long run. An England visit could increase rugby engagement throughout the country.

America needs to increase national interest in the sport as the country is set to host the Rugby World Cup in 2031 and 2033, spending $500 million on it.

While there are rugby fans in the US, the sport is overshadowed by American football, basketball and baseball, among other American sports. However, a recent study predicts that there will be a 10% growth in the sport’s global following next year – with a large portion of that expected to come from the US, should the match against England go ahead!
