England boss Lee Carsley: I haven’t applied for a full-time job

England interim manager Lee Carsley said he has not made a formal application to become their permanent boss and added that he felt privileged to be given the opportunity to manage the senior squad.

After managing England Under-21s since 2021 and guiding them to the European U21 Championship title last year, Carsley will oversee England’s Nations League fixtures in September, with a view to staying on throughout the autumn as they look for a full-time successor to Gareth Southgate.

While the 50-year-old started his spell with a comfortable 2-0 win over Ireland in the Nations League, followed by another 2-0 victory against Finland, Carsley faced his first wave of criticism after England were shocked 2-1 . loss to Greece at Wembley on Thursday.

“I haven’t formally applied for it,” Carsley told talkSPORT on Saturday. “Because I was in the U21s.

“I am very happy with my job but I am an employee of the Football Association (FA) and I was asked to take over the senior team which is a privilege; it was the proudest moment of my career so far.

“I am truly honored by the opportunity to lead the senior team. I’m in a very fortunate position, I’m on the inside and I can see how much potential this team has.

“I have said all the time: it is one of the best jobs in world football. There are not many jobs where you have a chance to win. I believe that the coach who comes in has a very good chance to win and that we deserve.” the best there is.”

England, second in Group F of the Nations League with six points from three games, play Finland later on Sunday.
