England and Spain top favourites for knockout round

Despite a lacklustre performance in the Euro 2024 group stage, pre-tournament favourites England still have the best chance of winning as the competition enters the knockout stages.

The round of 16 starts on June 29 and the final will be played in Berlin on July 14.

England won the group but managed just two goals in three games. They won the opening game and had to settle for two straight draws. With some of the most talented players in world football, the team’s performance was met with harsh criticism from fans and pundits.

“I understand the story that’s being told to me and it’s better for the team than it being told to them,” manager Gareth Southgate told reporters. “But it creates an unusual environment to operate in. I haven’t seen any other team qualify and achieve a similar feat.”
