Elon Musk Teases Mark Zuckerberg Over His Viral 4th of July Surfing Video

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s unique way of celebrating Independence Day sparked a social media feud with fellow tech billionaire Elon Musk.

On July 4, Zuckerberg posted a video to Instagram showing himself wakeboarding while wearing a tuxedo, holding an American flag, and enjoying a drink. The video garnered a lot of attention, with fans praising his enthusiasm. Tesla CEO Elon Musk, however, took a different approach.

Musk commented on the video, seemingly taking a dig at Zuckerberg’s lifestyle. “May he continue to have fun on his yachts,” Musk wrote sarcastically. “I’d rather work.” The comment hinted at a possible difference in priorities between the two tech leaders.

There’s no denying the success of Zuckerberg’s video. The video went viral on Instagram, garnering over 900,000 likes and millions of views. The viral moment fits with Zuckerberg’s apparent rebranding efforts, which aim to portray him as a more carefree, adventurous figure. It’s a stark contrast to the criticism he faced in 2020 for a similar water sports outing, where his casual attire drew ridicule.

The two billionaires are among the richest people in the world, making them elite even by Silicon Valley standards.

This incident isn’t the first time Musk has criticized Zuckerberg.

The billionaire tech CEOs of Tesla, SpaceX (Elon Musk) and Facebook (Mark Zuckerberg) have been at odds since a SpaceX rocket explosion destroyed a Facebook satellite in 2016. Their disagreements span a range of topics, including artificial intelligence and Facebook’s data collection practices. Musk recently linked Facebook to the violent uprising in Washington, D.C., calling it a “domino effect.”
