Elina Svitolina ends season after foot surgery

NEW YORK — Elina Svitolina’s tennis season is over, the Ukrainian announced Wednesday. She underwent surgery on her right foot due to a long-term injury.

Svitolina returned from maternity leave last year in full force, reaching the semifinals of Wimbledon, but she said the injury still bothered her in her 2024 season.

“Unfortunately my 2024 season is now in the history books as I had surgery on my foot today to correct a long-term issue that I have been trying to manage all year,” Svitolina wrote on Instagram, alongside a photo of herself in a hospital bed.

“It has become increasingly difficult to manage and it has an increasing impact on me, not only in tennis and training, but also in my daily life.”

The 30-year-old Svitolina lost in the third round to American Coco Gauff at the US Open, her last match of the year. She has indicated that she plans to return to the tennis court in 2025.

“I am excited for the opportunity to focus on my recovery and come back stronger than ever before,” she said.
