EFCC Investigates EFCC: The Bobrisky Bribery Scandal

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was set up to fight financial crimes and corruption in Nigeria. However, over the years, people have started to doubt its effectiveness.

Once known as a strong investigative body, the EFCC is now accused of being inefficient, corrupt, and even involved in the crimes it was supposed to stop.

Recently, issues involving Bobrisky, a well-known social media personality in Nigeria, have made people question the EFCC’s honesty even more.

VDM, also known as Very Dark Man, made headlines by accusing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of corruption, alleging that the agency accepted a bribe of 15 million Naira to settle a case involving Bobrisky, a prominent Nigerian social media personality and cross-dresser.

This accusation adds to a series of allegations questioning the integrity and effectiveness of the EFCC, which was established to combat financial crimes and corruption in Nigeria.

EFCC’s Response to the Allegations

In response to recent allegations through their X (Twitter) account, the head of the EFCC said they have quickly formed a team of investigators to thoroughly examine the claims.

As part of this investigation, the Commission requests the presence of both Okuneye and Otse at its Lagos Directorate to aid in uncovering the details of the alleged bribery.

”The EFCC is committed to conducting a comprehensive investigation and will transparently share the results with the public. We assure the public of our dedication to integrity and accountability throughout this process.”

Is There Hope for the EFCC?

EFCC has developed a reputation for going after smaller targets particularly young Nigerians suspected of internet fraud, also known as “Yahoo boys.” This aggressive pursuit of youths stands in stark contrast to the agency’s leniency towards powerful politicians and individuals accused of much larger financial crimes.

The allegations involving Bobrisky have only added to the growing belief that the EFCC is part of Nigeria’s corruption problem rather than its solution.

Unless there is a genuine effort to address these issues, the EFCC risks becoming an ineffective body, powerless in the face of the very crimes it was created to fight.
