Ederson confirms he will stay at Manchester City this summer

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has confirmed he will remain at the club following their Community Shield victory over Manchester United.

City claimed their first trophy of the new season by beating United 7-6 on penalties after the match had ended 1-1 after 90 minutes.

There was more good news for City after the match, with Ederson confirming he would stay at the club despite the strong association with a move away.

Ederson was heavily linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League for most of the summer, with both Al-Nassr and Al-Ittihad showing interest. According to some reports, he had agreed personal terms with Al-Nassr, but a transfer fee was never agreed between the clubs.

The 30-year-old also denied on social media that he had been influenced by the praise Stefan Ortega received at the end of last season, when the German replaced the injured Brazilian.

During City’s pre-season tour of the US, Guardiola had indicated he wanted the Brazil international to stay. Ederson has now confirmed he will remain at the Etihad Stadium.

“The decision has been made,” he told ESPN Brazil.

“I’m staying at Manchester City this season. I spoke to Pep and it was crucial. I’m happy to stay and I’m fully focused on winning more titles here.

“I have also spoken to the board, directors and teammates and I will stay.”

Ederson has been with City since 2017, after joining from Portuguese giants Benfica. He has been a regular for Pep Guardiola between the posts.

The goalkeeper won six Premier League titles, the Champions League and several League Cups and FA Cups.

Ederson kept 16 clean sheets in 43 games in all competitions, making a total of 332 appearances for the club.

Winger Savio is City’s only new signing so far, but the club will be delighted that Ederson has decided to stay as he plays a key role in the way the team plays.
