Dylan Groenewegen wins sixth stage of Tour de France, Tadej Pogacar retains yellow jersey

Dutchman Dylan Groenewegen won the sixth stage of the Tour de France on Thursday, a 163.5-kilometer ride from Macon. He won the stage in a neck-and-neck race.

The 31-year-old Jayco AlUla rider let out a loud scream after beating Belgian Jasper Philipsen to take his sixth individual stage win at the Tour, while Eritrean Biniam Girmay finished third.

Slovenian Tadej Pogacar retained the yellow leader’s jersey after a scare midway through the stage with the Burgundian vineyards in the background.

The 2020 and 2021 champion was left without a teammate when reigning champion Jonas Vingegaard’s Visma-Lease a Bike team split the peloton in two with brutal acceleration and crosswinds.

Pogacar was on the right side of the split, but his UAE Emirates teammates were all stuck behind them. A combined effort allowed them to rejoin the leading group 70km from the finish.

Mark Cavendish, who won a record 35 Tour stages on Wednesday, was not present for the final sprint.

The Briton was also reprimanded by race control for using his team car’s slipstream to get back into the peloton after suffering a mechanical problem. (Reporting by Vincent Daheron; Writing by Julien Pretot; Editing by Ed Osmond and Ken Ferris)
