Dunlap Takes PGA Tour Top Spot With Second Win

In January, at The American Express in La Quinta, the 20-year-old Dunlap, then a sophomore at the University of Alabama, became the eighth amateur to win a tour event and the first in 33 years. He turned pro a few days later.

On Sunday at Tahoe Mountain Club in California, Dunlap took the lead with a 55-foot eagle putt on the par-5 15th hole, the only PGA Tour event to use the modified Stableford points system.

He eventually won against Vince Whaley, with Patrick Fishburn one point behind him in third place.

Players receive eight points for an albatross, five for an eagle and two for a birdie. One point is deducted for a bogey and three for a double bogey.

“After I made the putt on the 15th hole, we started playing with a lot of adrenaline,” Dunlap said on the Golf channel broadcast.

“I never thought that was possible, to be honest,” Dunlap said of his feat of winning as an amateur and a pro in the same season.

“I have to thank my team. They are so supportive.”

Dunlap was nine points behind leader Mac Meissner, but had 19 points in the bogey-free round to finish on 49. He birdied six of the first 12 holes on the tree-lined Old Greenwood course.

With two events remaining in the regular season, Dunlap jumped from 95th to 63rd in the tour’s FedEx Cup standings. The top 70 advance to the playoffs.

Whaley made a 16-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th hole for a nine-point day.

Fishburn had 46 points and made a 10-foot birdie on 18 to close out a 12-point round.

Meissner finished fourth on 44, capping a five-point round with a bogey.

Taylor Pendrith and Patrick Rodgers finished in a tie for fifth place with 43.
