It’s safe to say that Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell believes he should be part of the US basketball team for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

He revealed this during an episode of Wave Sports + Entertainment’s 7:00pm in Brooklyn:

7:00pm in Brooklyn @7:00pm in Brooklyn

“I feel like I deserve to be in that spot.”
Spida responds to his omission from the 2028 Olympic team roster, saying he is currently among the top 10-15 players in the league.

“First of all, I think Book’s (Devin Booker) approach should be every hooper’s approach,” he said. “His ‘I’ll do it (tweet),’ I respect that a lot because that’s the same kind of time I’m in. I’m not going to lie. I didn’t see myself in a lot of the predictions for the draft. It’s bullshit. But it is what it is. At the end of the day. If that’s what it is, then that’s what people think I should just do more of. That’s kind of my whole mindset, but I think I deserve to be right in that (conversation).

“…You’re not the first one to talk to me about this, but my first year in Cleveland, I’m an All-Star starter, All-NBA. Granted, I worked hard, don’t get it twisted, but there’s a lot more s–t that goes along with it. So I think that’s part of it, but of course you’ve got to win. Realistically, I see myself as one of the top 10-15 players in this league, but I haven’t made it to a Conference Finals yet. So to make that jump, I can’t sit here and get mad… because this is a world that we live in based on accolades, whether it’s good, bad or indifferent.

“It is what it is. So until that happens, I’m just gonna keep plugging and plugging. I’m not shocked when I see it, it’s more like ‘okay bet!’ and it’s more of a thank you to myself, like every year that I get something. There’s never any complacency. And when that day comes and I win a chip, I’ll probably be like my man JT (Jayson Tatum) saying every (fucking) meme that I’ve seen.”

The Booker post Mitchell was referring to took place in September 2023, when the Phoenix Suns guard responded to a call from Kyle Kuzma, who said Team USA needed some stars to fill more defined roles.

That’s exactly what he did at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, helping the Americans win gold. He appeared in all six games and averaged 11.7 points, 3.3 assists and 2.7 rebounds, while sometimes fading behind LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant.

Head coach Steve Kerr even told reporters Booker was named the team’s “unsung MVP” during the Games.

That Mitchell appears open to such a role in 2028 will likely increase his chances of making the roster. There could be a lot of turnover, as aging stars like James, Curry and Durant may not be back for the upcoming Olympics. That means there will be a lot of competition, and Mitchell sounded ready to embrace that.

Leading the Cavaliers to a deep playoff run in the coming seasons would certainly be an ideal start.
