Dominik Szoboszlai’s heroic role in helping stricken Barnabas Varga after horrific injury

Dominik Szoboszlai played a key role in helping his injured Hungarian teammate Barnabas Varga as the forward was struck by his collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

Varga was accidentally caught in the face by Gunn’s arm as he challenged for the ball after a Szoboszlai free-kick midway through the second half.

The Ferencvaros striker appeared to suffer a reaction after being hit, then lay motionless on the grass as the Hungarian players desperately called for help.

Medics then emerged from the sidelines with a stretcher, but the Hungarian players were angry that it took so long to treat Varga. Captain Szoboszlai then approached the medics and pulled their stretcher towards Varga in an attempt to rush them.

Szoboszlai then appeared to be in tears as fencing was erected all around Varga and he was treated before being taken to a nearby hospital.

Hungary boss Marco Rossi confirmed that Varga had suffered facial fractures and a concussion after the match, adding that he was fortunately otherwise “healthy”. He said his players were angry because the medical staff was slow to respond.

“What I heard from the players is that Barney looked unconscious,” Rossi said. “Everyone was very concerned about his condition and worried that the doctors arrived a little late. They probably didn’t realize it was a dangerous situation.

‘We can now say that Barney is not at any risk. He will probably undergo surgery in the coming hours because he suffered a fracture here (points to cheek), but he is healthy. If we get through the competition, he will obviously no longer be part of the team.”
