Legendary para-athlete Devendra Jhajharia believes it is only a matter of time before javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra breaks the 90-metre barrier. He predicts that he will be able to throw 93 metres within a year or two.

Chopra won silver at the Paris Olympics earlier this month with a throw of 89.45 meters, while gold went to Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who stunned the javelin world with an Olympic record of 92.97 meters.

On Thursday, Chopra finished second again in the Lausanne Diamond League with a final round throw of 89.49 meters, behind two-time world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada, who threw a monstrous 90.61 meters.

Jhajharia, himself a legend in the Parajavel throw with two gold medals at the Paralympics in the F46 category, said that if Chopra breaks the 90-meter barrier, it will be by a wide margin. He will be crossing the elusive mark by 3-4 meters.

“If I say it in the language of javelin, 89-plus has become a barrier for Neeraj now. I have seen in my sporting career of 20 years that if a barrier is broken, it is not just a metre or so, but 3-4 metres,” the 43-year-old Jhajharia told PTI.

“When Neeraj does that, he doesn’t just throw 90-plus, his javelin goes 3-4 meters further. Please remember my words.

“So Neeraj will throw 92m to 93m once the barrier is broken. He should do it in one or two years,” said Jhajharia, who was elected president of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) in March.

Jhajharia, who also won silver at the Tokyo Paralympic Games to become India’s most decorated Paralympic athlete, said Chopra’s best form will come only in the next two years.

“Age is in his favour, 26 is no age and I hope he is at his peak at 28 or 29. He will be at his best by then.

“He is very disciplined and very dedicated. I saw that when we trained together in Finland in 2022,” he said.

Chopra turns 27 in December this year.
