Delta Flashback: Barnes Gets His Bike Through the Massey Tunnel

A free shuttle is still available, or cyclists can also travel with TransLink, as all buses that run through the tunnel have racks for two bicycles.

Here’s a look back at the 1975 pages of the Optimist.

It took a lot of lobbying, but in April of that year the George Massey Tunnel finally got a bicycle shuttle service.

Vancouver Centre MP Emery Barnes was a strong supporter of the service’s introduction for cyclists, but was the only cyclist at its launch.

The service ran five times a day between the Richmond side of the tunnel and the Town & Country Motor Inn, a spokesman for the state highway department told the Optimist the new service was “a huge waste of money.”
