DCU chief and Superman director James Gunn makes cryptic tweet referencing Martian Manhunter

DC Universe boss James Gunn is having fun on social media with a cryptic tweet referencing Martian Manhunter.

The tweet below features a photo of a pack of Chocos, DC’s version of Oreos. Fans of DC comics know that Martian Manhunter, one of the original seven members of the Justice League of America and one of the most powerful beings in the DC Universe, is addicted to Chocos, making this tweet a clear reference to the beloved superhero.

But what does it mean? Fans are already speculating that the tweet indicates that Martian Manhunter will play a role in Gunn’s DCU. So far, the character is not scheduled to appear in next year’s Superman film, directed by Gunn, or to star in a DCU TV show or spinoff.

It’s also a timely tweet, as this week we finally got a look at what George Miller’s Martian Manhunter would have looked like in the canceled Justice League Mortal, via a leak from a makeup artist. Hugh Keays-Byrne (Immortan Joe in Mad Max: Fury Road) was reportedly set to play Martian Manhunter in that film.

In July, Gunn confirmed which DCU projects are currently in development. Responding to a fan on Threads who asked if the Wonder Woman-related series Paradise Lost is still in production, Gunn confirmed that it is not, but provided a list of projects that are. “Nothing is ‘in production’ unless it’s greenlit,” he clarified.

Superman and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow are the only two DCU films currently in production, with the first the only DCU project with a release date not at all: July 11, 2025.

Also in production is Peacemaker Season 2 (which continues exactly where season 1 left off), Lanternsand “a handful of animated projects,” including Creature Commandos, which will kick off the DCU when the premiere will take place in December 2024.

Finally, Penguin is the latest project in developmentbut this is not part of the DCU and instead part of the BatVerseled by Robert Pattinson’s 2022 film The Batman.

Gunn clarified that this doesn’t mean the other projects are being shelved or forgotten. “Paradise Lost, like many other titles, known and unknown, is still in very active development,” he said. “It will go into production as soon as we have a script or scripts that we think are great and ready to shoot, never before. As an aside, we haven’t officially cast for anything that hasn’t been greenlit.”

Many of the projects within DCU Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters work is therefore still going on behind the scenes, including the films The Authority, The brave and the boldAnd Swamp thingOn the TV show front, Waller, Booster Gold and the aforementioned Paradise Lost are awaiting the greenlight at DC Studios.

The movies and shows that are in production will likely come first, but Waller may be the most likely candidate to get the green light next. Gunn replied to another fan to say that it’s going “great” and in “very active development.”

Despite Creature Commandos coming first, the main project of the DCU is of course Superman. David Corenswet plays the Man of Steel and Rachel Brosnahan plays Lois Lane, among a bunch of other superheroes: Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Edi Gathegi as Mister TerrificIsabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, María Gabriela as the engineerand more. Gunn has confirmed These actors will also play roles in other DCU projects.
