Haason Reddick’s long-term contract extension reportedly turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the New York Jets.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the money the Jets saved from Reddick’s deferments and fines went toward paying star wide receiver Davante Adams (h/t Jeremy Bergman of NFL.com). New York took on $11.6 million of Adams’ $16.89 million base salary when the team added him on Oct. 15 in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Reddick was assessed $4.5 million in fines before agreeing to end his deferment on Oct. 20, according to Rapoport.

Following the trade, Adams’ contract was restructured to lower his 2024 cap hit to $3.21 million and add two empty years to his deal (via ESPN’s Adam Schefter).

The 31-year-old no longer has any guaranteed money left in his contract, with Schefter noting that Adams and the Jets “will discuss his future in New York after this season.”

As for Reddick, his search for a long-term contract will continue after his 2024 campaign. He will receive his remaining $8.7 million base salary in his modified contract, along with $5.3 million in performance-based incentives, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

Reddick turned down a lucrative short-term extension that would have been worth about $20 million before the start of the season, Rapoport revealed Sunday.

The two-time Pro Bowl outside linebacker will make his season debut for the Jets against the New England Patriots.

Adams will also line up on the other side of the ball, looking to build on his first game with the team in Week 7. He was targeted nine times but could only haul in three receptions for 30 yards during the 37-yard game in New York . 15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

As the Jets try to bounce back from a rough 2-5 start to the season, there will be key players on offense and defense on Sunday.
