Danny Jansen will make MLB history by playing for both the Red Sox and Blue Jays on Monday

Boston Red Sox catcher Danny Jansen will make unusual baseball history on Monday.

The seven-year veteran will become the first MLB player to play for both teams in a single game when the Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays complete a game that was suspended due to rain on June 26. The game will resume Monday as the first half of a doubleheader.

Jansen played the original game for the Blue Jays, but was traded to Boston on July 27. Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed that Jansen would be included in the starting lineup when play resumes, meaning he will officially play for both teams in the same game.

Reporters and columnists have asked Cora about the possibility of Jansen playing in the resumed game, knowing that an unusual situation could arise, according to Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald. The manager made the announcement before Friday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

“Yeah, he’s catching,” Cora said, according to Starr. “Let’s make history!”

Jansen, 29, played 13 games for the Red Sox, hitting .257 with an OPS of .794, two home runs and five RBI. With Toronto, he played 61 games, hitting .212 with an OPS of .671, 13 doubles, six homers and 18 RBI.

The June 26 game was tied at 0-0 in the second inning when it was suspended. Jansen was actually batting for the Blue Jays with one out, a runner on, and trailing in the count at the time, 0-1. He will now replace Reese McGuire in the Boston lineup. McGuire had been assigned to duty when the Red Sox acquired Jansen.

“I don’t even know how this works,” Jansen told The Athletic after he was transferred to Boston. “I’ve heard about it a couple times. That would be funky.”
