Danielle Collins Gives Health Update After Heat Stroke, Injury Suffered During Olympics

Danielle Collins revealed in a health update with fans that she has also been diagnosed with rectus abdominitis after suffering heatstroke at the Paris Olympics. However, she confirmed that she plans to return to action next week in Monterrey and also play at the US Open.

In her first and last Olympic appearance, Collins made a promising start as she reached the quarterfinals before bowing out injured to Iga Swiatek while trailing 1-4 in the third set. Unfortunately for the 30-year-old American who is set to retire later this year, not being able to finish off Swiatek wasn’t the only negative as she was also forced to skip back-to-back WTA 1000 events in Toronto and Cincinnati.

“A little update for everyone who has been reaching out and keeping an eye on me since my injury at the Olympics. After suffering from heat stroke in Paris, I pulled my rectus abdominis. I suffered a similar injury in this area almost four years ago which kept me out of competition for over four months. I don’t want to go through that again,” Collins wrote on Instagram.

Collins doesn’t have to miss the US Open

Collins’ withdrawals in recent weeks have caused some concern as fans began to fear she might not be able to play at Flushing Meadows for the last time. That scenario, however, should be avoided.

“As I approach the end of my career, it’s important to try to rest and recover so this can heal as quickly as possible. I was really bummed out that I had to leave Toronto and Cincinatti. I hope to return to competition in Monterey. I hope to continue my season after the US Open and continue to pursue the goals I have set for this year. Thank you to everyone who has reached out over the last few weeks and all the love and support as always,” Collins added.

Collins hopes to play some matches during the WTA 500 tournament in Monterrey and find some rhythm in preparation for the US Open.
