Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson likely did not suffer a torn ACL after suffering the injury during Sunday’s 33-17 win over the Cleveland Browns, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Ferguson will undergo an MRI scan of his left knee on Monday, according to Calvin Watkins of the University of California. Dallas Morning News.

According to Watkins, Ferguson felt he could have played on with the injury and hoped it was just a strain.

The 25-year-old left the field in the third quarter of the Cowboys’ win over the Browns after being tackled. He was listed as questionable to return, but he did not return to the game.

Ferguson was targeted five times on Sunday and caught the ball three times for 15 yards.

Patrik Walker of the team’s official website reported that the tight end left the Dallas locker room without crutches or a brace, wearing only an ice pack on his knee.

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was also optimistic about Ferguson’s future when he spoke to reporters after the game.

“I think we dodged a big one,” Prescott said, according to Jon Machota of The Athletic. “When I talked to him, he gave me a lot of confidence that he was going to be OK.”

Ferguson is coming off a breakout 2023 season that saw him earn the first Pro Bowl nod of his career. The former fourth-round pick has racked up 71 catches for 761 yards and five touchdowns, steadily becoming one of Prescott’s top options in the passing game.

In his last seven appearances, including the Cowboys’ lone playoff game last season, Ferguson has averaged eight targets per game and has hauled in 41 catches for 433 yards during that same span.

He was expected to remain one of Dallas’ top offensive playmakers in his third season, earning praise from offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer during training camp.

“When you look at this guy and his leadership, and he’s found his voice in that room, he’s so respected,” Schottenheimer said, via Ben Grimaldi of Cowboys Wire. “He’s a tone-setter.”

Should Ferguson be absent for any length of time, Dallas is expected to call on backup Luke Schoonmaker until he can return.
