Coroner identifies pedestrian struck by train in West Ashley

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The Charleston County coroner has determined that the pedestrian was killed early Saturday morning after being struck by an Amtrak train.

Elvin Thomas Dixon, 73, of Charleston, died in the crash, according to coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal.

The accident happened at about 5:25 a.m. on the railroad tracks near Highway 61 and Bees Ferry Road, Inspector Michael Gillooly said.

Investigation shows that the pedestrian was trying to cross the track at that time. There were no injuries to any passengers on the train, Gillooly said.

The accident remains under investigation and no charges have been filed. Police did not close any lanes in the area, but witnesses reported that the train had stopped on the tracks earlier that morning while the scene was active.
