Cornell Interfraternity Council cancels weekend social events amid sexual assault report

ITHACA (WBNG) – The Cornell Interfraternity Council has canceled all social events for the weekend.

The IFC announced the decision in an Instagram post on Friday.

The decision to cancel the events comes as Cornell University’s Chi Phi fraternity faces allegations of sexual assault and forced drug use.

“The Cornell Interfraternity Council is committed to the health and safety of all members and guests,” the IFC said. “We find all forms of sexual misconduct unacceptable and strongly condemn the use of illegal substances.”

On November 11, Cornell University police announced they were investigating a report of a victim being forced to consume ketamine and other drugs while being sexually assaulted by several men.

The Chi Phi fraternity then went inactive. Executive Director of the Chi Phi Fraternity Chapter at Cornell Michael Azarian told 12 News that the frat had been temporarily suspended.

Azarian said the frat will cooperate with police and the university in the investigation.

Sometime earlier this week, the Chi Phi sorority house on Edgemoor Lane in Ithaca was vandalized with eggs and graffiti during the overnight hours. The word “rapist” was spray-painted on the sidewalk in front of it.

Activist group Riot Moon claimed responsibility for the destruction.

“Confraternities were created to consolidate white male power and perpetrate violence, abuse and rape in our communities,” Riot Moon said. “We will no longer tolerate a culture that teaches men to rape, the use of sexual violence to subjugate others, or a ‘justice system’ that continually forces survivors to relive their trauma and leaves abusers unpunished and unashamed.”

The activist group said it does not trust Cornell’s leadership or law enforcement to keep them safe.

Cornell University called the allegations “deeply troubling.”

In its message, the IFC also expressed its condolences for students who had fallen into a chasm. One of the students was killed in the incident.
