Conor McGregor fears stem cell treatment will worsen injury setback at UFC 303: ‘My toe hurts’

Former two-weight champion Conor McGregor has revealed he has undergone treatment to repair his broken toe, which ruled him out of this weekend’s UFC 303. Through the use of stem cells, which he now believes may have aggravated his injury.

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight champion and featherweight titleholder, has been sidelined from the Octagon for the past three years. He suffered a broken left tibia and fibula in a first-round doctor TKO loss to former interim gold holder Dustin Poirier.

And McGregor, who will make his return at UFC 303 next weekend during International Fight Week, pulled out of his welterweight bout with Michael Chandler, citing a “heartbreaking” broken toe that is expected to keep him out for a potential two-month spell the side will hold.

He’s already planning his comeback – as he eyes a return to action in August, ex-twoweight kingpin McGregor revealed he has undergone stem cell treatment to tackle his toe injury, but admits he’s not sure know if this has worked to the best of his ability.

“They put stem cells – I did everything they asked – they put stem cells in me, took it out of my back and put it in my foot, 20 mg (milligrams) from my own back, from the bone marrow,” says Conor. McGregor told Severe MMA. “Already in the (toe) break.”

“But my fucking toe hurts, mate,” Conor McGregor explained. “And I don’t know if inserting the stem cells into the fracture was the right move. I don’t think it’s the swelling anymore – I think it’s just the fluids or stem cells in my toe. So I’m thinking, ‘Am I going to have a damn swollen toe all the time now?’

Still planning a summer outing – despite uncertainty from UFC CEO, Dana White, McGregor confirmed he would still pursue a fight with the aforementioned Chandler in his immediate return to active competition.
