McGregor was found by a civil court jury to have assaulted Ms Hand in a hotel in south Dublin in December 2018.

The jury, made up of eight women and four men, deliberated for just over six hours before reaching their verdict on Friday afternoon.

McGregor shook his head after the jury read out that Ms Hand had won her case against him.

But she lost her case against another man, James Lawrence, who she alleged also “brutally raped and assaulted” her that same evening.

Both had denied her claim and claimed the sex was consensual.

In a now-deleted post, McGregor angrily denounced the verdict, vowing to appeal and saying he was “keen to be proven right”.

After winning her civil case, Ms Hand said outside court: “I would like to start by saying I have been overwhelmed and touched by the support I have received from everyone.”

She then thanked a number of people who supported her during the case, before adding an emotional tribute to her daughter.

Sobbing, she said: “Finally I would like to thank my daughter Freya, for whom I am most grateful.

“She has given me so much strength and courage during this nightmare over the past six years to continue pursuing justice.

“I want to show Freya and all the other girls and boys that if something happens to you, you can stand up for yourself, no matter who the person is and that justice will be done.”

Earlier in the case, McGregor denied Ms Hand’s allegations and claimed they had had ‘enthusiastic and athletic’ sex.

The Irish sports star was shown photographs of bruises on Ms Hand’s body, taken in the days after the alleged assault.

Under cross-examination, McGregor denied the cause of the bruises, saying they “may have resulted from her diving into the bath.”

Ms Hand’s lawyer highlighted how a tampon had to be removed from her using tweezers at the hospital when she attended after the alleged rape.

Gordon said: ‘The liar here is McGregor, who doesn’t have the courage or decency to admit what he did.

“He’s not a man, he’s a devious coward and you should treat him like he is.”

And referring to the bruises on Ms Hand’s body, Mr Gordon said: “Let’s put it this way: someone did it. It happened at the Beacon Hotel. It was McGregor.”
