A Colorado spokesman has denied a rumor that head coach Deion Sanders asked the Buffaloes’ band not to play the school’s fight song after touchdowns by Shedeur Sanders.

“This is not true,” the spokesperson said (courtesy of ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura). “No one ever asked the band not to play the fight number.”

Jake Shapiro denversports.com reported Saturday that Sanders allegedly told the band not to perform if his son scored so the loudspeaker could play his own song, “Perfect Timing.”

The spokesperson explained that a snippet of Sanders’ song is played after he scores, though the band performs the school’s fight song immediately afterward. Colorado kicker Alejandro Mata’s song is also played briefly after a made field goal before the band begins operations.

The quarterback’s song was widely discussed early in the Buffaloes’ 2024 season, when Nebraska used it to mock Colorado in the team’s locker room following a 28-10 win on Saturday (via Nick Igbokwe of Sportskeeda).

Sanders couldn’t find a rhythm against the Huskers, getting sacked five times. He finished just 23 of 38 for 244 yards, throwing one touchdown and an interception that was returned for a score in the first quarter.

“The way we started doesn’t reflect who we are and we just never got it done,” Deion said after the game, according to ESPN’s Max Olson.

The 22-year-old signal-caller fared much better in the Buffaloes’ season opener, a 31-26 win over North Dakota State on Aug. 29. Sanders completed 76.5 percent of his throws for 445 yards and four touchdowns against one interception. He also added 17 yards on the ground.

Sanders won’t get to hear a snippet of his own song after a potential touchdown in Week 3, as Colorado travels to take on Colorado State on Saturday. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. ET.
