Coco Gauff Surprised by Diana Shnaider at National Bank Open

TORONTO — Top-seeded Coco Gauff was eliminated from the National Bank Open on Friday, losing 6-4, 6-1 to 14th-seeded Diana Shnaider in windy conditions at Sobeys Stadium.

In preparation for her US Open title defense, Gauff was broken when trailing 5-4 in the first set. The 20-year-old American double-faulted when trailing 2-1 in the second set and Shnaider held serve to take a 4-1 lead.

Shnaider, also 20, secured victory with another break, which put her in the quarterfinals against No. 6 Liudmila Samsonova, where she beat Elise Mertens 6-2, 6-4.

In the last match, number 2 Aryna Sabalenka played against Katie Boulter.

Earlier, defending champion Jessica Pegula defeated qualifier Ashlyn Krueger 6-2, 6-4.

Third-seeded Pegula, from nearby Buffalo, New York, took advantage of Krueger’s nine double faults. Last year in Montreal, Pegula defeated Samsonova in the final.

She will face Peyton Stearns, the fifth American to reach the quarterfinals when No. 12 Victoria Azarenka withdrew with a thigh injury.

Taylor Townsend defeated fourth-seeded Jelena Ostapenko 6-2, 6-1 and No. 8 Emma Navarro defeated No. 11 Marta Kostyuk 7-5, 7-5 to advance them both to the quarterfinals.

Amanda Anisimova advanced after No. 10 Anna Kalinskaya of Russia retired with dizziness. Anisimova won the first set 6-2.
