Coco Gauff shares sad update on US Open campaign

The WTA 1000 in Toronto was a disappointment for Coco Gauff, which after the Paris Olympicc campaign that did not yield the results the American tennis player had hoped for. Out in the singles against Sofia Kenin, out in the doubles together with Jessica Pegula and out in the mixed doubles with Taylor Fritz. At the Canadian Open another painful defeat, this time against the young, rising Russian star Diana Shnaider.

Now Coco is thinking about her future, to get her tennis and confidence back. At the US Open she will defend the title and be the first to move she has decided not to play the women’s doubles in Cincinnati or New Yorkto focus on her singles tournament career, stressing that she could return in 2025 to play some women’s doubles tournaments but that this would not be a priority in any case.

I don’t play doubles“It’s hard to go on tour week after week, that’s why. But maybe next year I’ll play here and there. I won’t play doubles as consistently as I have in the past. The goal was just to be as good as I can for the Olympics and then, yeah. Every week, week after week, I get to the end of the week, when I play singles and doubles, I’m usually in the semifinals, at least in one event,” she explained.

It is certainly not an easy time for the number 2 on the WTA ranking. After the rather disappointing Olympic Games in Paris, without having won a medal in singles and doubles, the American tennis player – as I said at the beginning of the article – returned directly to the court in Canada.

The results were not optimal due to the threatening change of the surface which made it difficult for her to adapt. During the press conference, Coco commented on the performance being below expectations, which led to the surprising elimination.

“I knew the match was going to be tougher, even tougher because I knew I wasn’t in the best shape. I had my chances, but I got frustrated quickly and started making mistakes. I felt like I made a lot of mistakes on shots that I think are more my strengths, I even think I missed a lot of backhands. I felt the mental and physical fatigue of playing the Olympic event and coming here right after. Maybe I shouldn’t have played this tournament, but I wanted to test myself. It’s not enough for me to stay in the top 10, that’s not a big goal for me. I want to win big tournaments,” she said.
