Coco Gauff breaks with Brad Gilbert after frustrating US Open

NEW YORK — World No. 6 Coco Gauff and coach Brad Gilbert are parting ways after the player’s frustrating fourth-round exit at the US Open, Gilbert said Wednesday. He added that he is looking forward to the next chapter in his career.

Gilbert helped Gauff to her first Grand Slam trophy in New York last year, but the player was unable to retain her title after disappointing early exits at the US Open tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati.

“Thank you @CocoGauff and the entire team for an absolutely amazing summer in 2023 and for 14 months of incredible team effort,” Gilbert, who reached No. 4 in the world rankings in a 13-year playing career, said on X.

“Coco, at just 20 years old, your future looks incredibly bright, and I wish you nothing but continued success. I look forward to the next chapter in my coaching career.”

Gauff followed up her big breakthrough at Flushing Meadows with semi-final finishes at the Australian Open and French Open this year.

But there were clear signs of friction between her and compatriot Gilbert at Wimbledon, where she shouted at him in frustration during her fourth-round defeat to American Emma Navarro.
