Cobra Kai stars put ‘heart and soul’ into final season

Cobra KaiWilliam Zabka says the team put “their heart, soul and body” into filming the series’ final season.

During an exclusive interview with Digital spyZabka, who plays karate sensei Johnny Lawrence, praised the actors, writers and stunt team for all their efforts: “I think we put on a great show and we’re excited to show it to the world.”

Zabka said the cast had a “false start” during filming and that production was halted due to film industry strikes. But he also said the crew was “ready and raring to go” after the “long break.”

“It was literally like climbing Mount Everest,” the actor said Digital spy“There was a lot of work ahead of us, a lot of fighting, a lot of emotional beats, it was unbelievable. Incredibly challenging recording schedules.”

Despite the demands, Zabka said it was “so satisfying to play”.

Looking back on the season, the Cobra Kai star admitted: “It started to get nostalgic, and a little sad, and emotional. Ultimately, I think we did it. I think we all feel like we’ve made the landing. There’s a satisfaction in completing that work and then a bitter sweetness of the fact that it’s the end of the story.”

His co-star Yuji Okumoto (better known as Chosen in the series) shared Zabka’s sentiments.

I came into it later, but (Zabka and Ralph Macchio) were there from the beginning. If you just look at (their) interaction with the kids on the show, they were essentially their fathers. They raise these kids and watch them grow into these great actors and I think these guys were their mentors.

“For me, as an outsider watching their relationship, it was so amazing and I’m sure you know it was a mixed bag for them to let it go. It’s almost like saying, ‘Okay, you’re going, I’ve given you the tools,’ so it was amazing to see that.”

The final season pays tribute to the late Pat Morita’s character Mr. Miyagi, who also passed away on the show. Season six delves further into Miyagi’s secret past, leaving Macchio’s Daniel with conflicted feelings about the person he thought he knew.

Commentary on the story, legacy Karate child Actor Macchio said he is happy with the way the story is turning out.

“I think we do a really good job of bridging the 10 episodes, even more than that,” Macchio said. “Daniel finds the truth for himself through what is sort of a mystery of who Miyagi might have been in areas of his life that he didn’t know about.

“In season six, it was important to find something new in that way and I’m really excited about how the fans are going to see all of that and how that plays out.”

Cobra Kai returns with Season 6, Part 1, streaming on Netflix on Thursday, July 18.
