Chris Sutton insists Man United’s defeat to Spurs is the ‘type of game that earns managers the SACK’ – as Premier League winner accuses Erik ten Hag of spewing ‘verbal diarrhea’

Chris Sutton claimed Erik ten Hag’s days at Man United could be numbered after their defeat to Tottenham.

United went into the match at Old Trafford desperate to regain some momentum after having to settle for a lethargic draw against Dutch side FC Twente in midweek.

Those hopes would soon be dashed, however, as Spurs took an early lead after Brennan Johnson tapped in from close range following a lightning run from Micky van de Ven.

Bruno Fernandes would see red on the brink of half-time for the first time in his four years at the club, before second-half goals from Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke condemned the hosts to a humiliating defeat.

After the match, Ten Hag insisted that Fernandes’ exclusion had ‘changed everything’ for his side, adding that he felt the referee’s decision to send off his captain was unjust.

However, former Chelsea and Blackburn striker Sutton took aim at the Dutchman’s comments and criticized the players who gave the fans a lap of honor after the whistle.

‘Ten Hag has verbal diarrhea.’ Sutton said on BBC 5 Live.

‘I don’t know what game he was watching. The round at the end is a loser’s round. Qarabag gave Tottenham a better game on Thursday evening than Manchester United today.

“That’s the kind of performance that gets the manager fired.”

Ten Hag narrowly avoided losing his job this summer, with United’s Ineos reportedly looking for potential successors after the club slumped to their worst ever Premier League finish last season.

However, the owners ultimately opted to extend his spell in charge, with an FA Cup win over rivals Manchester City seemingly swaying the decision in his favour.

Following Sunday’s result, Jamie Redknapp insisted the decision could ultimately prove to be little more than a stay of execution, with Ten Hag’s position at the club looking increasingly tenuous.

“If your club is actively looking for another manager you are in a hugely untenable position because the players know you are not the man,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.

‘You can’t keep the manager after looking for other managers.

‘They play like they’re lost. The players they brought in don’t look good.

‘This club has attacking DNA. I see too many players not putting in that extra effort. That’s not how this club was built.

‘I don’t see how he can keep his job with these performances. I don’t know how he can turn it around.

‘I know he won two trophies last year but I don’t know how he can take them further, but I don’t know who that is.

‘They’ve scored five goals in six games, Man United. This is a graveyard for great players. Everyone who comes here goes downhill. Everyone is so devoid of trust and faith.”
