‘Chris Evert has a problem with Jessica (Pegula)?’ – US Open fans accuse American legend of blatant Iga Swiatek bias

Chris Evert doesn’t seem to have a chance at the US Open. First, it was her comment about Naomi Osaka’s dress that got her in trouble, and then in the same match she compared Osaka’s opponent Karolina Muchova to a male player. Furthermore, her praise for Coco Gauff despite the reigning champion’s disappointing performance led to more criticism of her commentary. But her problems don’t seem to end there.

During the I’m going to Swiatek During the quarter-final match against Jessica Pegula, fans felt that Evert was biased towards the American and that she could not appreciate the monumental performance of the 30-year-old. Pegula reached the semi-finals of a Grand Slam on his seventh attempt by beating the Pole 6-2, 6-4.

Shortly after we secured the SF spot, we heard Pegula say, “There have been so many weird moments, and I just kept losing. I know Everyone kept asking me about it, but I thought, ‘I don’t know what else to do. I just now I have to go back there and, like, win the game.’ So thank God I was able to do that. And finally — finally! — I can say, ‘Semifinalist.“”

With this victory, Jessica Pegula is now the fourth American in the Open Era to reach the women’s singles SF at the Canadian, Cincinnati and US Opens in a calendar year. However, fans did not appreciate Evert’s commentary during the match in which Pegula made history.

They accused Evert of talking more about Iga Swiatek than Pegula and even claimed that she was cheering for the world number 1. Fans pointed out that the commentator was more interested in what Swiatek did wrong than in praising Pegula’s game.

Pegula was calm and held her ground against a determined Swiatek. She was able to absorb the pressure and handle Swiatek’s first serve well throughout the match. With 22 of 41 unforced errors on the forehand, the Polish was forced into a corner by the American. And although Swiatek hardly impressed and was far from her best, that does not detract from Pegula.

Swiatek had entered the match with three games in a row without a break point, but Pegula broke her four times. This was a testament to how well the Buffalo native had performed in thwarting her opponent, but fans felt that her play received little to no praise from Evert. This is similar to what happened in the earlier round during the Coco Gauff vs Emma Navarro match.

In the fourth round, Gauff had a disappointing match with 19 double faults and 60 unforced errors. Navarro won the clash 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. However, Evert praised Gauff throughout the match and was accused of being biased towards the reigning US Open champion. Furthermore, even after Gauff’s elimination, Evert made a bizarre assessment.

She suggested that with Gauff and Elena Rybakina both out, Swiatek would be confident of going all the way. While Rybakina holds a 4-2 H2H record against Swiatek, the reigning French Open champion leads 11-1 ahead of Gauff in a one-sided affair.

Although she has been accused of favoring one American, her alleged bias against Jessica Pegula did not sit well with fans. Although Evert later expressed her joy that Pegula had reached her first Grand Slam final, it did not stop the flood of criticism that came her way.

Chris Evert acknowledges Pegula after coming under fire for quarter-final commentary

This is not the first time that Evert has faced a backlash from fans for her comments. Last year, Evert received a major backlash for her comments during Swiatek’s match against Pegula in the WTA Finals. The Polish tennis player defeated the American quite easily 6-1, 6-0, but Evert still believed that Pegula had a great performance. Fans laughed at her when She went on to say that JP could win Wimbledon in 2024.

But this time she was being criticized for being “biased” towards Iga Swiatek. Two different situations in two different tournaments, but controversies continue to haunt this tennis legend. One fan wrote: “#USOpen2024 I’m starting to think Chris Evert has a problem with Jessica?? Come on and give the girl something chrissie.

Another fan commented: “Chris Evert is a hater. She almost refuses to give Pegula credit.“We don’t know for sure if Evert is a hater, but she was. acknowledge that Pegula reached her first Grand Slam final in a tweet. She wrote, So happy for @JPegula reaching her first Grand Slam final! No one deserves it more than her…” Pegula defeated Karolina Muchova 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the semi-finals to earn a match against Aryna Sabalenka.

Meanwhile, the US Open had been a controversial tournament for Evert for some time, even before the recent incident.

Earlier in the second round, when Naomi Osaka was taking on Karolina Muchova, Evert’s comments caught her attention for all the wrong reasons. She first commented on Osaka’s dress during the match, saying: “I like the dress… it suits her, it fits Japanese culture.” This led to many accusing Evert of stereotyping. Later, when Muchova defeated Osaka to advance, Evert complimented her playing style, but her choice of words led to backlash.

“She plays like a man. She wants to play like a man. The men have a bigger serve than the women, they generally have better volleys, they move a little bit better,” Evert said. This led to Ons Jabeur addressing the comments and supporting Muchova. She wrote: “Muchova is an incredibly talented player. She doesn’t have to be a man to have a great serve, volley or movement. Can we please stop stereotyping based on gender?”

After hearing her comments during the 2024 US Open quarterfinals, another fan asked: “Isn’t it the responsibility to show some level of honesty when commenting at this level? If so, can someone tell Chris Evert what BIASED means???

There was more backlash when one fan pointed out: “@usopen it seems like Chris Evert cheers for Iga more than Pagula, she almost never compliments the American player. SMH. Chris Evert only talks about how things aren’t going well with Iga.”
