Chicago area schools close early due to extreme heat

Some schools in the Chicago area are going home early on Tuesday due to the continued extreme heat.

An extreme heat warning is in effect for northern Illinois, while a heat warning is in effect for most of northwestern Indiana.

In the Chicago area, temperatures could reach 99 degrees Celsius or even 100 degrees Celsius. The “feels like” temperatures will be between 105 and 115 degrees Celsius.

Lyons Township High School D204 has implemented an early dismissal schedule for Tuesday, with students being released at 11:30 a.m. due to the weather forecast.

Burlington’s Central School District 301 has canceled kindergarten classes and released all elementary and middle school students early. The middle and high schools will end classes at 10 a.m., while elementary schools will be released at 11 a.m.

Classes have been canceled at Banneker Elementary School in Marquette, Gary due to work on the building’s HVAC system.

Chicago Public Schools has canceled all outdoor sports activities. All outdoor practices are being moved indoors or canceled.
